“TWO CHAIRS AND A HOUSE DIVIDED” BY JIM JENKINS VIDEO

Jim Jenkins’ “Two Chairs and a House Divided” is a kinetic contemporary, electronic motor-operated sculpture made with wood, aluminum, lead and timed motors. This piece measures 29” x 36” x 25” and features a small orange chair, a larger blue chair, and a yellow and black striped house outline. This piece is particularly relevant now as the split in Congress as well as the split in ideologies is greater than ever. As the blue chair moves up and down, the orange chair bounces faster and out of the seat portion of the blue chair. While the two chairs go up and down, the house splits in the middle, at which point the blue chair stops moving until the divided house comes back together. Inspired by technological inventions and kinetic artworks of the past, Jenkins brings life to the inanimate with mechanical movement that creates a performance for the viewer. Jenkins is also influenced by movement found in nature. His motorized pieces move with precision as they support the theme of the piece made from found materials.
