“A WORLD AROUND” BY JIM JENKINS

Jim Jenkins’ “A World Around” is a kinetic contemporary, electronic motor-operated sculpture made with plexiglass, stainless steel, aluminum and LED lights. This piece measures 84” x 38” x 38” and features a blue globe and a yellow house. Inside the yellow house is a light that flashes to illuminate the words “YOU”, “ME”, “THEM”, and “US” on all four sides. As the words flash, the globe rolls around the home on a circular track that rocks back and forth atop stacked boxes. On top of the house, like a weathervane, are the outlines of a woman and man that circle round the top of the home. Inspired by technological inventions and kinetic artworks of the past, Jenkins brings life to the inanimate with mechanical movement that creates a performance for the viewer. Jenkins is also influenced by movement found in nature. His motorized pieces move with precision as they support the theme of the piece made from found materials. Jenkins uses text in his pieces to redirect the viewers attention to the theme of each piece.
